Welcome to the CONCENTRATION GRID community site ...

Welcome to the CONCENTRATION GRID community site ...

We began our enterprise several years ago with a very simple goal:  To create a convenient way for students, athletes, coaches and others to use the mental focus grid exercise.

We coded our own implementation of the grid exercise based on the "on paper" grid game concept and our ideas.  (This is a "family business" - dad and daughters ... dad did the initial coding/gameplay engine while daughters designed logo and color selection and look/feel and some other features.)

We chose the name CONCENTRATION GRID for our implementation of the grid game and registered the domain name www.concentrationgrid.com in 2014.

In our implementation of the grid exercise, we decided to present grids in sizes from 3 columns/rows to 14 columns/rows - a total of 68 possible different grid sizes.

We came up with the idea of a "GRID ID" - a text string that would capture data from gameplay for users/players.  The data in the GRID ID text string includes a count of the game (ID), the configuration and total size of the grid (columns, rows and grid units), the time to complete the grid (elapsed time), the numbers that were selected fastest and slowest, and the date/time of gameplay.

We used our initial version of the grid game with beta testers - including using as a school science fair project.

Then with some programming help from experts, we made a public introduction of our CONCENTRATION GRID game - first with free web gameplay and then as an app for mobile devices (Apple/iOS and Android).

Three years later we thank all of you who have supported us to this point.  Our goal was and is to provide a quality experience for you with our CONCENTRATION GRID app/game.

Over the years, with thousands and thousands of games played, we have watched "grid masters" achieve times that astound ... we have learned a lot.  (We learned of our unfortunate mistake of not also reserving our domain name with an "s" on the end because someone took that "+s" domain and put up a site like ours - call us biased, but we think our implementation of mental focus grids is better).

We have modified and tinkered with the CONCENTRATION GRID game to make it more useful/user friendly and fun/entertaining.  We made some changes to menus and added some functions ... but we have held to our fundamental original choices - such as the "sheet of paper" look and feel for gameplay, not to include (distracting) ads, not to put a timer on the gameplay screen, etc.

We think the grid game is best presented with a simple-looking gameplay screen that looks like a sheet of paper (old school) ... mental focus grids should be all about focus focus focus.

We integrated our app/game with social media - so that players could share their times with others (new school).  Users/players can share their experience (and show off their best gridtimes) on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. - and can post their grid/gridtime to a leaderboard.  (There is one leaderboard for each of the 68 different grid sizes.)

We noted benchmark gridtimes based on observations from gameplay ... we invite feedback on the benchmark gridtimes.

And we added some undisclosed ("easter egg") features (that we will disclose later).  Can you figure out how to get a "hint" during gameplay?

We charge 99 cents for the CONCENTRATION GRID app (available for Apple/iOS devices, at Google Play/Amazon for Android devices and soon on the Microsoft app store) - which we think is a good value ... web gameplay is free at www.tryconcentrationgrid.com

We have set up the possibility for sponsorship - interested sponsors can contact us ... but no ads.

At the start of the venture, our vision was to implement a "community" site - with leaderboards and other information for users/players.   The community site is in operation at www.concentrationgrid.net ... users can post their grid/gridtimes to the leaderboard (immediately after gameplay or from the web later) and evaluate their progress in comparison with others (referencing benchmark gridtimes).

Our next planned effort is to add a competition/contest function at the community site - to help coaches, schools, teams and others run competitions/contests using the CONCENTRATION GRID exercise/game. That work is in development.

The general informational site is at www.concentrationgrid.com (and we have a blog at www.cgridid.com)

We hope you enjoy using our CONCENTRATION GRID exercise - tell your friends and coaches (but maybe not your competition).

Make self-development a daily habit.

We appreciate for your continued support.  Please share feedback with us.

Thank you.

CONCENTRATION GRID app - mental focus grids

The Concentration Grid app is based on the mental focus grid exercise.  Mental focus grids have long been used as a tool by coaches and sports performance/psychology professionals to assess and improve performance of their athletes.

The objective of the grid game/exercise is to select in sequence each of the numbers (randomly arranged and presented) in the grid. Performance is timed. The challenge is to complete the grid as quickly as possible. The exercise calls for focus and concentration.

The grid game/exercise has been a long-time favorite of many baseball/softball coaches and players (typically using printed/paper sheets, a pen and a stopwatch).

Coaches/sports performance staff and athletes now can do their mental skills training work (and save paper) by using the Concentration Grid app on their mobile device.

The Concentration Grid app is intended to provide competitive challenge and a fun/entertaining experience that is simple and straightforward ... like the printed paper grid exercise - but more convenient.

Nothing fancy. Nothing distracting. Nothing flashy. Only the grid. Numbers. Black. White. Red. No on-screen timer or visible ticking clock.

Focus. Concentration.

With the Concentration Grid app the level and nature of the challenge can be varied by changing the size of the grid - by selecting the number of rows and columns for the grid.

Grids can be generated in a variety of sizes - from 3 columns/rows to 14 columns/rows. (A grid does not have to have the same number of rows and columns.) More rows/columns, more numbers. More numbers, more time.

Try a 3x3 grid ... a 3x14 grid ... a 7x7 grid ... a 5x10 grid ... a 7x10 grid ... a 10x10 grid .... a 10x12 grid ... a 14x14 grid. You get the idea.

The standard is a 10x10 grid - which a focused grid master should be able to complete in under 4 minutes.

Other benchmarks ...

A 3x3 grid can be completed in about 3 seconds.

A 5x5 grid might be completed in under 15 seconds.

A 7x7 grid can be completed by a master in well under a minute.

A 9x9 grid might be completed in 3 minutes.

A 14x14 grid will take well over 10 minutes to complete.

Test yourself:  Can you complete a 6x6 grid in under 30 seconds?

Smaller grids will call for dexterity and quick vision as well as focus/concentration.

Larger grids will challenge your ability to sustain focus/concentration ... your mental stamina is put to the test.

Challenge yourself with Concentration Grid. Track and measure your improvement as you practice. Then compare your best grid times against the best grid times of teammates and others (against the benchmark times and on the leaderboards on the community website www.concentrationgrid.net)  ... who is the fastest?  Who is a master of the grid? (Coaches and teachers can set up intrasquad competitions/tournaments to find out.)

Practice makes perfect. Sustained attention and effort are rewarded with improved performance/times in the grid exercise.

The grid exercise can be practiced in quiet places/at home or during road trips or during school/practices ... or under loud/distracting (game day) conditions. Parents/teachers might have their children/students use concentration grids to practice and improve concentration ability. In a world filled with distractions, use Concentration Grid to practice/exercise mental focus skills.

The Concentration Grid app will provide your grid time (elapsed time to complete the grid exercise) as well as a GRID ID data set that includes additional information about your performance.  The app will also maintain a history/file for you to monitor your performance/improvement.

And Concentration Grid includes a SHARE feature which will allow you to share/post your grid times and screenshots on social media and to the leaderboards (at www.concentrationgrid.net ... community site).

The Concentration Grid app is perfect for coaches, athletes, students, teachers/educators, sports performance/psychology staff, parents, children, adults - young and old ... those of any age who want to challenge themselves and practice/improve their ability to focus.

Challenge yourself.  Make self-development a daily habit.

CONCENTRATION GRID - origins, efficacy and uses

Documented origin of the use of a focus grid as a concentration exercise has been credited to Dorothy Harris and Bette Harris, who referenced the exercise in their book titled "The Athlete's Guide to Sports Psychology: Mental Skills for Physical People" (Leisure Press/Human Kinetics, published February 1, 1984) (see pages 92-93 and 189). See www.amazon.com/Athletes-Guide-Sports-Psychology-Physical/dp/0880112069 and https://books.google.com/books/about/The_Athlete_s_Guide_to_Sports_Psychology.html and https://books.google.com/books?id=LdztAAAAMAAJ (Harris and Harris in turn credited use of the grid exercise to "Eastern Bloc countries with athletes").  As an aside, Dorothy Harris earned her Ph.D. from the University of Iowa and was a long-time professor of physical education at Pennsylvania State University (1970-1991); she is credited with developing one of the nation's first graduate programs in sports psychology (see www.libraries.psu.edu/findingaids/419.htm ).

The "efficacy" of the concentration grid exercise was apparently studied (circa 2006) by one group of researchers, who conducted a study with the stated purpose "to examine the efficacy of Harris and Harris' (1984) concentration grid exercise, an exercise proposed to enhance concentration and visual scanning speed." See I. Greenlees, R. Thelwell and T. Holder, "Examining the efficacy of the concentration grid exercise as a concentration enhancement exercise," Psychology of Sport and Exercise at 29-39 (January 2006) (abstract available at www.researchgate.net/publication/222679858_Examining_the_efficacy_of_the_concentration_grid_exercise_as_a_concentration_enhancement_exercise). As reported in the Abstract, the study (of 28 male collegiate soccer players over a 9-week period with 9 weekly meetings) produced results indicating "no significant interaction effects indicating that the concentration training group did not improve to a greater extent than the control group in any measure of concentration" -- leading the researchers to their conclusion that "[t]he findings highlight the need for further research examining the efficacy of the concentration grid exercise using different training protocols and different dependent measures" and that "[i]n addition, the results also indicate support for sport psychologists who have urged caution with the use of the concentration grid exercise in applied sport psychology".

Whether so-called "brain games" actually "work" (on the brain) has been the subject not only of academic/scientific debate but also of federal regulatory enforcement action. See for example www.ftc.gov/news-events/press-releases/2016/01/lumosity-pay-2-million-settle-ftc-deceptive-advertising-charges and http://fortune.com/2017/07/10/brain-games-research-lumosity and www.popsci.com/do-brain-exercises-work and www.cnn.com/2016/10/20/health/brain-training-exercises/index.html and www.scientificamerican.com/article/brain-games-do-they-really and www.slate.com/blogs/future_tense/2014/01/28/lumosity_cognifit_cogmed_are_these_kinds_of_brain_training_games_worth_it.html

No claims are made that use of the Concentration Grid app as a training exercise will produce an improvement of anything (other than perhaps over time your performance on the Concentration Grid app). Neuroscientists are not on staff.

The actual experts can do the research/evaluation of the grid exercise itself and provide their evidence - and others can report the findings as they see fit ... for example, see www.fastcompany.com/40451692/this-is-the-only-type-of-brain-training-that-works-according-to-science and https://theconversation.com/some-brain-training-programs-are-backed-by-evidence-heres-how-to-pick-them-73205 and www.ecu.edu.au/news/latest-news/2017/02/putting-brain-training-to-the-test and www.researchgate.net/publication/312389475_Systematic_Review_of_the_Clinical_Significance_of_Commercially_Available_Computerized_Cognitive_Training (or more concisely https://goo.gl/nRjCWw)

The Concentration Grid app was developed as a modern-day implementation of the grid exercise a/k/a mental focus grids - intended in a manner that can readily be used as a tool for assessment/test (measure your time/progress), skill development (at the least skill at using the app), practice/exercise of attention skills ... and for competitive challenge and fun/entertainment.

The Concentration Grid app can generate grids in varying sizes of between 3 and 14 columns/rows. Mastery of the smaller grids will call for speed/dexterity; mastery of the larger grids will call for sustained focus/attention. (There are 68 different grid sizes to try and eventually master.)

Abstract

Working with youth athletes requires knowledge of the inherent variability in child and adolescent development that will impact the implementation of a mental training program. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of developmental considerations that should be noted when doing mental training, particularly for athletes participating in sport at mid-childhood, early adolescence, and mid-adolescence. Gender differences at these stages of development are also highlighted. Additionally, we forward best practice recommendations and learning-activities that have been tailored for each developmental stage that can be used in the provision of a mental training program in a team setting.

Inside the World of Mental Coaching in Major League Baseball (Sports Illustrated)

INSIDE THE WORLD OF MENTAL COACHING IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

Sports Illustrated

By JAMIE LISANTI May 02, 2018

www.si.com/edge/2018/05/02/bob-tewksbury-mental-coaching-baseball-jon-lester

Advanced metrics may be an indelible part of baseball, but another strategy is becoming invaluable to the game: harnessing the power of the mind. This year, a record 27 of the 30 MLB clubs employ a mental skills coach—longtime MLB pitcher Bob Tewksbury holds the position for the San Francisco Giants. Here, he discusses the world of mental performance and the psychology behind baseball, as detailed in his forthcoming book, Ninety Percent Mental.

On mental coaching becoming a trend and more accepted in baseball

"Since I started doing this with the Red Sox in 2004, the players have started to come around as it’s become more normalized. But it’s not for everybody. Some people just don’t want to talk about [the mental process] or they’d rather do something physical to help them perform better. A lot of guys think it's a gimmick or a quick fix. You have to buy in and make it a part of your routine. You have to be committed to the process."

...

HOW DOES AN ATHLETE LIKE JON LESTER USE TEWKSBURY'S PROGRAM TO GET READY TO COMPETE?

Here’s a look at Lester’s preparation in the hours before a game.

FOCUS

Designed to help increase and sharpen focus, Lester uses index-card-sized "focus grids," where he must locate a number in a jumbled-up puzzle, to help sharpen his focus before ballgames. The cards look like crossword puzzles, with numbers from 00 through 99.

At 49, Jamie Moyer's Pitching Career Goes Into Extra Innings - NPR

At 49, Jamie Moyer's Pitching Career Goes Into Extra Innings

NPR

October 2, 2013 ...

This is FRESH AIR. I'm Terry Gross. Last year, our guest, Jamie Moyer, became the oldest pitcher ever to record a win in the majors. He was 49. But Moyer's story isn't just the tale of a talented guy who hung onto his game a little longer than others. He was actually a more effective pitcher in his 40s than in his 20s because he got control of the mental side of his game, and he did it with the help of a gruff, self-taught sports psychologist named Harvey Dorfman.

Moyer was never blessed with a blazing fastball. His speed was below average, even in his youth. And to compete in the big leagues, he had to locate his pitches with pinpoint accuracy and out-think his hitters. He's managed to do that plenty and, with an extraordinary work ethic, keep his body in shape to play with men half his age.

...

MOYER:  Well I have, yeah. I have, I'm going to get to the serious stuff first. You know, through this work with Harvey I carried a concentration grid that I made. And, you know, the concentration grid was numbers in little boxes. And from 00 to 99 and they were, you know, spread out all over and I visually had to go from 00 to 99, and I would time myself. And I couldn't use my fingers. There were some things, words that I had written on cards that I would read. I read them for 19 years, the same cards and the same concentration grid and it really allowed me to refine my focus before I went out to pitch. ...

CONCENTRATION GRID - MOBILE DEVICE APP AND WEB GAMEPLAY

Concentration Grid is a web/mobile device implementation of the mental skills training exercise that many winning coaches and sports performance/psychology professionals have used with student-athletes to develop/improve and practice focus and concentration skills.
The objective of Concentration Grid is to select in sequence each of the numbers in the (randomly generated) grid.  Performance is timed as the athlete completes the exercise.
The level of competitive challenge/fun can be varied by changing the size of the grid – by selecting the number of rows and columns.  Concentration grids (sometimes called mental focus grids) can be generated in sizes ranging from 3 to 14 columns/rows.   Smaller grids challenge dexterity and quickness; larger grids require sustained focus and attention to complete.
